Have you heard of the “hillbilly slug” for a shotgun?

I had a friend show me what he called a hillbilly slug when we were out hunting. It will take a 6 inch wide branch clean off a tree and seems fairly safe but was wondering if anyone knows about this method?

You take a normal shotgun shell and cut the casing between the powder and the shot and only leave a small section to hold it together until fired. When you shoot it fires the whole front section like a packet and when it hits it has much greater impact and if it misses, it still doesn’t have much range.

I know guns and as long as you check the barrel each time to make sure the whole shell was expelled, it should be safe right?

My experience is mostly in rifles and pistols and larger caliber cannons but shouldn’t this be safe?

What could go wrong? The physics should be the same as a normal shell so no chance of it blowing up in your face.

I wouldn’t use it for hunting but it makes an impressive tree trimmer and blows the hell out of targets.

Also it is known as “cut-shot”. I agree with the above as it not being the safest thing to shoot, but it IS devestating. If you have your heart set on shooting some, make sure you have an improved choke or an unrestricted barell and use only 2 3/4 low brass shells. I’m sure I’m going to get some thumbs down here, and rightfully so…but, It really is cool. At 100 yards, I can get #7 birdshot to produce a 3″ hole. But, yes…a Maximum amount of safety must be taken. Sorry everyone, It’s just too fun not to do it.

Everyone on here saying not to do it is correct. It is very dangerous to do. You should never d!ck with the pressures and velocities of any weapon. I have done it many times and was probably lucky that nothing happened to me. Just take my advice, It IS very destructive, but I’m sure you wouldnt want all that pressure and steel comming back into your face.
